Micro-financing in Cambodia

This is the United Nations International Year of Micro-credit. VisionFund is the specialist Micro-finance arm of World Vision. It engages with and supports the entrepreneurial poor in communities it serves, using proven models of micro-enterprise development (MED) and micro-finance. A leading example in Asia is the experience of VisionFund Cambodia. Rommel Caringal, the founding general manager of VisionFund Cambodia is visiting New Zealand to help us promote VisionFund Cambodia, a licensed non-banking financial institution in Cambodia. Some key themes to be included in the presentation are:
  • Nature of entrepreneurship amongst the poor in SE Asia - typical first hand experiences;
  • The DNA of an entrepreneur - are they made or created - a SE Asian case study;
  • Challenges of starting up a Micro-finance Institution in a developing country;
  • Strategic challenges in scaling for national coverage;
  • Sustainability of entrepreneurs, enterprises, institutions in this setting;
  • The use of social capital for security; its applicability and reliability.
