Multilateralism, regionalism, bilateralism - what will be the Asia-Pacific context for New Zealand?

Gary Hawke has been on the staff of Victoria University of Wellington since 1968, and is currently Head of the School of Government and Professor of Economic History. He has been a visiting fellow at Stanford University in the United States, All Souls' College, Oxford in the United Kingdom, at the Australian National University in Australia, and with a number of institutions in Japan. He was Tawney Lecturer for the Economic History Society in the UK in 1978, and in 1998 in New Zealand, he was awarded the NZIER-Qantas Prize in Economics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand
He was appointed foundation Head of the School of Government in 2001 and had been Dean of Arts 1985-88 and Director of the Institute of Policy Studies from 1987 to 1998. Professor Hawke was associated with the New Zealand Planning Council from 1980, and chaired the Council from 1986 to 1991. He is currently chair of the board of the New Zealand Committee of the Pacific Economic Co-operation Council (PECC) and his presentation will draw on recent meetings of the PECC Standing Committee and the US Asia Pacific Council he attended in Washington which were addressed by US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Secretary of State Colin Powell..
