Personal reflections on NZ relations with Asia
Neil Walter joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1965 with an MA Honours degree from Auckland University. His career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade includes postings to Bangkok, to the United Nations in New York, to Samoa, as Deputy Head of Mission and Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris, as Deputy High Commissioner in London and as Ambassador in Jakarta and Tokyo.
Between 1987 and 1990, Mr Walter was Assistant Secretary (Corporate Services) of MFAT and Administrator of Tokelau, based in Wellington. He served as Deputy Secretary from 1994 to 1997 and Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1999 to 2002.
