NZ’s One-China policy: an outmoded hangover of the Cold War

Hon Peter Dunne, MP

Leader, United Future Party; MP for Ohariu-Belmont

An MP since 1984, Peter Dunne resigned from the Labour Party in October 1994, having been the Opposition Spokesperson on Commerce, Customs, and Revenue, and a member of the Opposition’s front bench.  He was a founding member of United New Zealand in 1995, and has been its leader since October 1996. In 1999 United joined with Future New Zealand to form United Future and Mr Dunne was elected Leader of this new party.

Mr Dunne’s recent visit to Taiwan has caused controversy and he is a trenchant critic of NZ policy arguing that, "The one-China policy we have followed slavishly since 1972 is an outmoded hangover of the Cold War thinking that places no incentive on China to improve its relations with Taiwan,"
